Hamfast Gamgee was also known as the Gaffer, Old
Gamgee, and Ham.
"Hamfast" is the equivalent for Ranugad, shortened
to Ran, and meant "stay-at-home".

Hamfast Gamgee, named after the "Gaffer", was the
son of Samwise Gamgee and Rose Cotton Gamgee. He was their seventh
child and fourth son.
