Barliman Butterbur quoted Gandalf's description of that Barliman thought fit him: "A stout little fellow with red cheeks...That won't help you much as it goes for most hobbits.... But this one is taller than some and fairer than most, and he has a cleft in his chin: perky chap with a bright eye." 1
Frodo was tough. After the shard of the morgul blade was removed by Elrond, Gandalf said to Frodo: "...Elrond removed a splinter. It was deeply buried, and it was working inwards..." "And it seems that Hobbits fade very reluctantly. I have known  strong warriors of the Big People who would quickly have been overcome by that splinter, which you bore for seventeen days." 2
What might Frodo have become like? After the splinter gave a hint of transparency to Frodo, especially his left hand, Gandalf said to himself: "Still that must be expected...." "He is not half through yet, and to what he will come in the end not even Elrond can foretell. Not to evil, I think. He may become like a glass filled with a clear light for eyes to see that can." 2
