Setting up Open Bnet on Router/Firewall for Diablo II

When playing 'Diablo II' on 'Open Bnet' you have to open up 'port 4000' on your router/firewall to allow other players access to your game (or else they will get a 'game does not exist' error).

The following are examples of how to do it on the 'Dlink DI-604' router (other routers have a slightly different interface and options, but the basics are explained here).

In this case, 3 examples are shown and explained:

1) VIRTUAL SERVER SETUP
A 'Virtual Server' must be enabled for the port.

2) EXTERNAL/SPECIAL APPLICATION SETUP
The port must be opened for external applications, in this case 'Open Bnet'.

3) FIREWALL OPTION VIEWING
This option ('Firewall') shows where you can check to make sure the virtual server is actually running.

  1. VIRTUAL SERVER SETUP
-After logging onto your router's software with Internet Explorer, choose the 'Virtual Server' option under the 'Advanced' tab.
    -Create a new entry:
    • Choose the 'Enabled' radio button.
    • Under 'Name' type any name you want for the virtual server.
    • Under 'Private IP' enter your PC's internal IP number assigned to it.
    • Under 'Protocol Type' choose 'Both' (i.e. UDP *and* TCP)
    • Under 'Private Port' type '4000'.
    • Under 'Public Port' type '4000'.
    • Under 'Schedule' choose the 'Always' radio button.
    • Click the 'Apply' button below. The new Virtual Server will now appear as a line in the 'Virtual Servers List' below. It will also appear in the 'Firewall' section/option (see #3 for details).

    • Under 'Trigger Type' choose 'Both' (i.e. UDP *and* TCP).
    • Under 'Public Port' type '4000'.

  5. FIREWALL OPTION VIEWING
-After logging onto your router's software with Internet Explorer, choose the 'Firewall' option under the 'Advanced' tab.
-To view the entry you added, scroll down to the 'Firewall Rules List' below, then click on the tiny notepad icon to the far right of the option name you added. All the details for the Virtual Server you added will appear in the 'Firewall Rules' section up top. To remove this server use the steps in example #1 and choose 'Disabled' instead, then 'Apply'.
